ColSac III - photo by Derrick A. Mayoleth

The Colsac III began service in 2003. The Ferry pulls itself across Wisconsin River between Merrimac and Okee using two large steel cables. The name comes from the fact that it links Columbia and Sauk counties via highway 113 . It carries approximately 200,000 vehicles a year.
Ferry service is open from April 15th through November 30th, 24hrs, 7 days a week, depending on conditions and is currently a free service. You may take bikes, autos, trucks, etc., on the ferry but you may wait awhile in long lines to board the ferry over the peak travel weekends. (a single crossing takes about 10 minutes) You may also walk on and enjoy the fresh air.

A ferry has crossed the Wisconsin River at Merrimac since the mid-1800’s. In 1933, the ferry was taken over by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, and seasonal free ferry service has been provided ever since. The Ferry Crossing is on the National Register of Historic Places.

To reach the ferry crossing just follow Hwy. 113 south out of Baraboo.
