The Do's
Study a Map - Take a little time to know where
you're going and how to get there. Avoid main arteries during peak hours. Travel
between Baraboo & Wisconsin Dells using County Highway A instead of the more
congested Highway 12. Also note that Highway 12 between Baraboo & Madison is
under a major upgrade which will cause occasional travel issues over the next
couple years.
Visit off-Season - First lodging will be available and cheaper. You also
get most of the natural areas to yourself. Baraboo area attractions are still
open, plus Wisconsin Dells has been investing heavily into indoor attractions.
You can enjoy many indoor water parks, movie plazas, live shows and more.
Discount Tickets - are often available for popular attractions through
the Baraboo Parks & Recreation Department located at the Baraboo Civic Center,
124 2nd street, room 16. Call 608-355-2760 for Ticket availability.
Visit During The Week - As you know lodging rates are higher on the
weekend. Why not visit during the week and enjoy a less crowed atmosphere.
Swimming - The lakes and rivers in the area tend
to become comfortable for swimming in mid-June. Devil's lake being a
closed system generally warms up slightly sooner than other bodies of water in
the area. However, this is Wisconsin and you may find the lakes chilly
throughout the summer depending on the year.
Find Small Family Owned Motels - Small motels may not have all the
amenities of the big chains, but they often make up for it in price and friendly
service. You will find many lodging links to small motels here.
Get Into Nature! - One of the greatest features of the Baraboo area is
the many natural attractions. Many are free or very inexpensive. Explore the
many area state parks and natural areas!
Pack Food - If you can avoid even one meal in a restaurant a day you will
save some $$. Have a picnic. Ochsner's Park in Baraboo has a great playground,
grills and a small zoo.
Compare Gas Prices - Often prices vary quite a
bit. Wisconsin Dells prices are usually higher than Baraboo. Prices on the
interstate also tend to be higher than in town.
The Don'ts
Don't come without reservations. Especially on weekends and holidays.
Every year since the dawn of time vacationers wait in lines, sleep in parking
lots, and drive for hours because the did not make reservations. In summer even
our private campgrounds are often full. The State Park Campgrounds ARE FULL.
Adults and kids get cranky and the whole vacation goes down from there. Please
Make Reservations.
Don't allow your children to run freely in amusement parks, natural areas
and stores. Each year children can get hurt or killed. Your children can drown
in the many rivers, lake and pools. Devil's Lake and other natural areas have
high cliffs and no barriers. Please care for your children.
Don't Swim in the Wisconsin River if you're not experienced. Every year
people drown. Often it's children and teenagers. The river has an incredible
undertow. Also sandbars which seem solid often can become like quicksand in a
matter of seconds.
Don't be stupid at Devil's Lake - You often hear climbers fall and are
hurt or killed at Devil's Lake State Park. Well, "Climbers" really don't. It's
just hikers "scrambling" up the talus fields or venturing too close to the edge
of a cliff. People die. This is a serious warning. Be careful at Devil's Lake.
Don't Hurry. Choose less activities on your itinerary. You will enjoy
your vacation more if you drive less. Again too many people are hurt in car
accidents each year. Especially on Highway 12. SLOW DOWN!
We are glad your coming to our area. Have a wonderful & safe vacation!
